In 1889, John Henry Twachtman settled in Greenwich, Connecticut where the seventeen acres of land he eventually purchased and the small farmhouse that he expanded over the years on Round Hill Road became his primary subject matter for the rest of his career. His move to Greenwich coincided with a period when he began to incorporate Impressionist influences in his art, but instead of painting sunlit scenes, he gravitated toward the rendering of misty, hazy days or landscapes enveloped in snow, in various states of iciness and thaw.
