Spanierman Gallery, LLC is pleased to announce the opening on January 6, 2011 of In the Tonalist Mood: Paintings from the 1860s to the Present, an exhibition that presents a broad spectrum of artwork by American artists that reflect the influence of a movement in art and culture in this country. Emerging in the years following the Civil War, the art that came under the Tonalist aegis by the end of the nineteenth century consisted of poetic images by artists who sought to express suggestive and ephemeral experience that transcended the purely visual realm.  The exhibition includes artworks by both artists who worked during Tonalism’s heyday as well as artists who have drawn inspiration from Tonalist art and ideas.
