During the late 1880s John Haberle gained a reputation for witty and satirical trompe l'oeil works. He was already exploring the genre earlier in the decade, however, as it was recently made clear with the discovery of That's Me, a painting depicting a tintype of the artist that is dated 1882. The work, which was Haberle's first effort in oil according to a note on its reverse, demonstrates that he had fully developed his unique artistic personality from the beginning of his career as a painter.
